Hammer on Italian minors - they're easy, and a weak Italy is a better neighbor. Avoid wars as much as you can - they weaken you with pretty much no upside. When NGF is formed, the alliance is going to be on paper only (ie NGF will not join any war on your side, even defensive ones) and Germany will break it almost immediately but an allied NGF is better than a hostile one.
Let Prussia take your German spheres, and focus on Italy to be able to fight the Redshirts and slow Italian unification down. Diplomacy: ally Prussia on day 1, and hold to that alliance as long as you can.
